The Logistics Manager will be responsible for planning and coordinating the movement of goods from suppliers through to clients. This includes domestic transport, international freight, export documentation, customs coordination, shipment tracking, delivery scheduling and the management of logistics service providers.
Working closely with procurement, suppliers, freight forwarders, transporters, clearing agents and clients, the Logistics Manager will ensure that each shipment is appropriately planned, documented and monitored. The role requires careful control of timelines, freight costs, cargo requirements and delivery commitments.
This position is suited to an experienced and commercially aware logistics professional who can manage multiple shipments, solve operational problems and maintain clear communication across the supply chain. The successful candidate must be comfortable working in a growing business where international requirements, transport conditions and delivery priorities can change quickly.

Responsibilities
- Plan and coordinate domestic and international shipments from supplier collection through to final delivery.
- Select appropriate transport modes and shipping routes according to cost, urgency, cargo characteristics, destination requirements and delivery risk.
- Obtain and evaluate quotations from freight forwarders, transporters, courier companies, clearing agents and other logistics service providers.
- Negotiate competitive freight rates, service terms, free-time allowances and related logistics charges.
- Coordinate booking confirmations, collection schedules, loading arrangements, delivery appointments and shipment handovers.
- Work with suppliers and procurement personnel to confirm that products are ready, correctly packed and available for collection according to schedule.
- Prepare, collect and review commercial invoices, packing lists, transport documents, certificates and other shipment information.
- Coordinate customs clearance activities with appointed clearing agents and provide the documentation required for import or export processing.
- Monitor shipments throughout transit and provide timely progress updates to management, suppliers and clients.
- Identify potential delays, port congestion, documentation errors, capacity constraints or delivery risks before client commitments are affected.
- Coordinate corrective action when shipments are delayed, misrouted, damaged, detained or affected by documentation discrepancies.
- Verify freight invoices and supporting charges against approved quotations, bookings and agreed commercial terms.
- Maintain accurate shipment records, logistics trackers, delivery confirmations and service-provider information.
- Monitor the performance of freight forwarders, carriers, transporters and clearing agents against cost, reliability, communication and delivery targets.
- Support cargo insurance arrangements and assist with the preparation of claims for lost or damaged goods when required.
- Coordinate temperature-controlled, fragile, hazardous, oversized or otherwise specialised cargo where applicable.
- Identify opportunities to consolidate shipments, improve container utilisation, reduce unnecessary freight costs and strengthen delivery reliability.
- Support the development of standard operating procedures for shipment planning, document control, customs coordination and delivery management.
- Protect confidential client, supplier, shipment and commercial information at all times.
Requirements
- A relevant diploma or university degree in logistics, supply chain management, transport management, international trade, business administration or a related field.
- At least five years of relevant experience in logistics, freight forwarding, transport coordination, shipping, distribution or supply-chain operations.
- Previous experience coordinating domestic and international shipments.
- Working knowledge of road, sea and air freight processes, including bookings, collections, tracking and final delivery.
- Practical understanding of customs clearance, export documentation and international shipping requirements.
- Familiarity with Incoterms and the allocation of transport costs, responsibilities and risk between buyers and sellers.
- Experience working with freight forwarders, clearing agents, shipping lines, airlines, transporters and courier companies.
- Ability to evaluate freight quotations and understand transport rates, surcharges, storage charges, demurrage and related logistics costs.
- Strong organisational, prioritisation and time-management skills.
- Ability to coordinate several shipments and delivery schedules simultaneously without losing attention to detail.
- Strong problem-solving ability and the confidence to respond calmly to delays, documentation issues and operational disruptions.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate professionally with clients and service providers.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook and shipment-tracking or logistics management systems.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare clear shipment reports, cost comparisons and delivery updates.
- Professional fluency in English. Additional South African or international languages would be advantageous.
- A valid South African driver’s licence and willingness to attend supplier facilities, warehouses, ports and logistics service providers when required.
- Experience with food products, hospitality supplies, medical products, industrial products or temperature-controlled shipments would be advantageous.
